Melbourne was originally inhabited by Paleo-Indians in the late Pleistocene epoch. The bones of a mammoth was discovered in the area by Harvard University zoologist C. P. Singleton. Melbourne was founded in 1867 by former slaves after the Civil War. The city was formerly called “Crane Creek” and re-named Melbourne in honor of the city’s first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, an Englishman who spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia. In 1934, the oldest black-owned business in the county, Tucker’s Cut-Rate Plumbing, was opened. The Naval Air Station in Melbourne was established in 1942 to train newly commissioned Navy and Marine pilots for World War II. The program was discontinued in 1946 and the land is now used by the Melbourne International Airport.
