Port Salerno was created in 1920 as a small settlement in the southern shores of the St. Lucie river inlet. The name “Salerno” originated from the Italian city of which the main settlers had emigrated from. The area’s population experienced a boom after World War II, with many “snowbirds” moving from the northeast to Florida’s warm and tropical climate. Port Salerno is well known for its World Fishing Tournaments based on its yacht port. According to the 2000 Census, Port Salerno has a population of 10,141 with 4,466 households and 2,862 families. The population density was reported being 2,803.2 people per square mile. There were 5,126 housing units at an average density of 1,416.9 per square mile. The people of Port Salerno are 88.5% White, 6.95% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 2.27% other races, and 1.34% recognized themselves as being two or more races. Hispanics/Latinos of any race made up 8.16% of the population. The population was spread out with 19.9% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $39,839, and the median income for a family was $45,016. Males had a median income of $32,420 versus $25,371 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,948. About 7.0% of families and 9.6% of the population were below thepoverty line, including 15.9% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
